Friday, #30: my new favorite politician

According to the Belgian constitution, the government needs to have the same number of French and Dutch-speaking ministers. Now that’s dedication to a two-faced nation. Elio Di Rupo, son of Italian immigrants, one of 7 children, openly gay, chemistry-major, bow-tie-wearing socialist, will become the new prime minister of Belgium [and my new favorite European politician]. And we thought it couldn’t get any worse. To be fair though, Di Rupo has proven to be one of the more sane people in that country. read article

Big words from French president Nicholas Sarkozy yesterday in Toulon, where he spoke of the necessity of Europe as such. My favorite quote is probably “solidarity requires discipline”. So [appropriately?] dramatic. Angela Merkel addressed her parliament today, pushing stricter budget rules, which would be an amendment to the EU stability and growth act. But it’s all ‘just look, don’t touch’ until the summit next week, which will either get an actual proposal for a fiscal union (EU-regulated national budgets) or a last-resort-style ECB intervention on the way. Bets are on the first option, because it’s what, besides Germany, France and Herman van Rompuy (president of the European council) are pressing for as well. read article
